EuFor, backed by NATO: New force in Bosnia relies on alliance troops with experience in region
Article Abstract:
Operation Althea, the European Union (EU) peacekeeping mission in Bosnia, relies heavily on NATO for command and control, reserve forces and even credibility with the local people. Many of the troops simply changed their shoulder badges, when European Forces (EuFor) took over nine years after NATO forces imposed peace on the war-torn country and some 80 percent of the 7,000 troops in EuFor belonged to contingents of the NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFor) it replaced.

European country NATO officials are holding up Romania as a model of defense reform, which joined NATO in March 2004. The country received praises for its armed forces' ability to rapidly deploy and for placing the right priorities on equipment modernization in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 10-year defense review plan of Hungary, from 2003-2013 is discussed. The specialized tasks, which the Hungarian Defense Forces will focus, include the end of conscription, military police work, water purification and bridge construction is highlighted.
