France weighs up the global price

Article Abstract:

The Navy of France is attempting to create an equilibrium between its extensive international military commitments and cuts in its budget for defense spending. The Marine Nationale forces of France are deployed in different regions, such as the South Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, where they are utilized for international peacekeeping operations, overseas territory defense, sea lane protection, national defense and nuclear deterrence. The Defense Minister of France, Alain Richard, warned that the military capacity of France will be severely hurt by additional reductions in defense spending.

One way of addressing the problems concerning the detection and engagement of quiet, low doppler diesel-electric submarines in shallow water is through upgrading software to existing anti-submarine warfare systems. Under the Broad Agency Announcement presented by the US Office of Naval Research, technologies that are anticipated to be addressed include broadband guidance and control concepts, specifically on such areas as counter-countermeasures techniques and detection and classification, among others.
