NCW in the littorals: A challenge for naval communications
Article Abstract:
Naval warfare in the littorals has much in common with that conducted on the open ocean and has considerable differences as littorals present a complex, dynamic and cluttered environment, thus offering challenges as well as opportunities in the employment of the netted forces of a blue-water Navy. The challenges faced by the naval communications and the network-centric warfare (NCW)-capable ships in the littoral environment are discussed.

Future MCM systems: Organic or dedicated, manned or unmanned?
Article Abstract:
The advantages of using MCM systems in the US Naval Forces are discussed. The main aim of using MCMs are to find and create Fleet Operating Areas that are clear of sea mines without requiring manned platforms to enter potentially mined areas and to accelerate the MCM timelines and also to ensure a large, safe operating area and transit routes and lanes in forwardly deployed areas.

Future MCM systems: Organic or dedicated, manned or unmanned?
Article Abstract:
MCM plays a significant role in the US Navy's 'Sea Shield' component of the 'Sea Power 21' strategy, which envisions fleets operating free of sea mines. The current MCM capability is inadequate and improvement would involve integrating diverse platforms and sensors and manned and unmanned systems.
