Hawkeye fixes gaze on merging missions
Article Abstract:
Northrop Grumman Corp's E-2C Hawkeye has been evolved since it entered service with the US Navy in Nov 1973. It has gone through a series of major radar and avionics updates, progressively broadening its mission profile to meet changing operational requirements over a period stretching almost three decades. It has been updated to reflect the reorientation of the carrier battle group towards operations in support of joint expeditionary operations in the littoral, a change which has seen the aircraft take on additional strike control, tanker coordination and combat search and rescue support tasks. Thus, the originalairborne early warning role has been overlaid by a wider airborne battlefield comlmand and communications function.
