Historical foundation for future capabilities: Naval Sea Systems Command supports USS Monitor recovery
Article Abstract:
The discovery and recovery of the USS Monitor, an ironclad warship from the Civil War, began in 1998, and is jointly led by the Naval Sea Systems Command and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The ship's engine is supposed to be removed in 2001, and its turret in 2002. The wreck has served as an excellent training location for personnel.
