Lebanon's Hizbullah organization, the Islamic Resistance, has increased activity around the Shebaa Farms, intensifying the pattern of retaliatory exchanges with the Israel Defense Force (IDF). Hizbullah intended to bolster its image as a defender of Lebanese sovereignty to appease domestic critics who view the party's activities in south Lebanon with suspicion by designating its attacks as retaliation.

Israeli offensive may not meet long-term objectives

A short-term suspension of violence between Israel and Hizbullah is possible due to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, but Israel has not achieved its long-term goal of destroying the Islamic Resistance of the Hizbullah. The threat of a regional conflict remains if there is a resumption of offences by Israel, with Iran and Syria supporting the Hizbullah forces.
