China's 11th five-year plan drawn up in October 2005 has announced a new emphasis on common prosperity, which aims at closing the income gap between China's rich and poor. The changes are derived from the widening income disparities in the country that are causing social instability, but the shift is not accompanied by significant political liberalization.

The fundamental issue of Taiwan's sovereignty has again taken center stage in its domestic politics, with pro-reunification parties appearing to gain the upper hand as Taiwan's opposition party members have visited the Chinese Mainland. The success of President Chen Shui-bian's party in recent elections show that cross-Straits tension will endure.
