An Aviation Survival Technician Third Class describes a search-and-rescue operation involving the tanker Bow Mariner that sank off the coast of Virginia. A rescue swimmer with the United States Coast Guard, he discusses the rigorous training candidates undergo at rescue swimmer school, including the EMT (emergency medical technician) course and the advanced swimmer school training where they learn cliff rescues and high sea rescues.

Article Abstract:
Captain Tom Bortmes, commander of Office of Naval Intelligence describes his career, challenges, work and the inspiration he took from a lieutenant commander named Ed Davis who befriended him. Captain Tom Bortmes was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Virginia and his concerns, as a graduate student about where the nation was going, had to be translated into action and commitment before joining the Navy.
