It has been proven that having a Marine recruit simply sit on a wooden bench, during a portion of a company's training cycle, can bring about remotivation when all else fails. This technique is referred to as the 'power of the pine.'

Incentive training for Marine recruits; an extra push can make a world of difference
Article Abstract:
Incentive training, a method of requiring a series of physical exercises for recruits who do something wrong, is common practice in the Marine Corps. The practice constitutes physical abuse, is largely ineffective, and should be banned.

Specialized training for the Marine infantry officer
Article Abstract:
The background, content and the end product of the major modifications of the entry-level officer training program that resulted in an Infantry Officer Course (IOC) at The Basic School (TBS) in 1976 are described. The IOC celebrated its 25th year of existence in the summer of 2002 and its recent graduates have performed very well in the Operation Iraqi Freedom.
