India's acquisition of the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov is set to be finalized in early 2000. The deal is valued at around $700 million, the cost of the refit of the ship into a full-size carrier. The ship, which will also have a carrier-borne fighter aircraft group, will be refitted at the Severodvinsk shipyard in Russia. The Admiral Gorshkov, which entered the Russian Navy in 1987, is scheduled to be ready for service in the Indian Navy by 2003.

India validates new doctrine with major exercises

The Indian Navy wil conclude SPRINGEX-2000 in Apr 2000, a 10-week long naval forces exercise that began in early Feb 2000. The exercises, which involved about 40 of the nation's ships and submarines and 45 of its aircraft, is aimed at honing its combat effectiveness through the validation of new tactical doctrines. The exercise is expected to build on the lessons learned during India's 11-week war with Pakistan in the summer of 1999.

Indians exercise in a big way
Article Abstract:
The Navy of India led the performance along the western coastline of the joint-service TRIUMPH 98 amphibious exercise, touted as the country's biggest since 1989. The tests, which were done over a month long period, involved 28 ships and more than 8,000 personnel. The military exercise involved T-72 main battle tanks (MBTs), BMP armoured personnel carriers (APCs), 15 ground-attack fighter aircraft such as MiG-21s, Mi-8 helicopters, Sea King and Jaguars, two Kilo-clasas submarines, several frigates and the INS Viraat.
