International Maritime Bureau: '1999 the worst recorded year for piracy'
Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in London, UK, has adjudged 1999 to be the worst recorded year for piracy and has confirmed the ever- escalating issue of piracy within many regions. The IMB's Piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, reported 285 attacks on merchant ships in waters off Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh and China in 1999. Late reports of incidents will most probably increase this total. The erosion of effective government in many African nations has also encouraged piracy there.

Global developments in the ASCM threat
Article Abstract:
Rapid advances in technology are expected to result in new types of anti- ship cruise missiles (ASCMs) that have longer ranges, fly lower, more maneuverable and stealthier. The US Office of Naval Intelligence says that the next generation of ASCMs can be classified into two types, the subsonic and the supersonic. Although it flies slower, the subsonic ASCM is said to be stealthier and more maneuverable than the supersonic ASCM. A supersonic missile, on the other hand, reduces the reaction time available to defenders.
