MARS programme passes Initial Gate milestone
Article Abstract:
Nine companies have shown their interest in bidding for the role of integrator for the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) programme. The MoD has confirmed that MARS programme has finally passed through its Initial Gate milestone after more than a year in limbo, where it is expected to deliver new afloat support shipping to replace the major part of the existing Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) fleet in the 2010-20 timeframe.

UK government gains approval for Trident deterrent renewal plan
Article Abstract:
The British Parliament has approved the government's plans to maintain and renew its strategic nuclear deterrent capability by building a new class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and buying into the U.S. Trident D5 missile life-extension program. The U.K. Ministry of Defense will now be able to sanction the start of concept design work for a submarine to replace the existing Vanguard-class SSBNs from 2024.

Study warns of sea container threat
Article Abstract:
According to a RAND Europe report, terrorists could potentially utilize ship containers to move weapons or dangerous materials. The report also said that terrorists could use the containers themselves as a weapon of mass destruction.
