The Commandant of the Marine Corps, in view of expanding the capability of the Marine Corps to conduct close air support (CAS), a crucial element of combined arms, directed that non-aviators be trained and employed as joint terminal attack controllers (JTACs). The JTACs are required to have the skill set to integrate aerial fires into the battlespace.

An analysis of combat service support capabilities of the US Marine Corps reveals that such support is almost non-existent. Ways in which support can be added to training methods without disrupting the training are described.
