NATO and the Baltic states
Article Abstract:
Nine former communist countries, including three Baltic Statets, met in May 2000 to plan their eventual membership in NATO. NATO, however, faces increased Russian hostitlity, and may be reluctant to accept the Baltic States that share a border with Russia.

Ukraine's security policy turns east
Article Abstract:
The 2001 terrorist attacks in the US have had the effect of strengthening Ukraine's ties with Russia, and with the Commonwealth of Independ States Anti-Terrorist Centre. Russia, for its part, is pressing for further strategic partnersihp with Ukraine.

Kiev craves closer ties with NATO
Article Abstract:
Ukraine's government, since the mid 1990s, has made an effort to foster closer relations with NATO, and with individual nations within the organization. It is assumed that Ukraine will, at some point, apply for NATO membership.
