No new ships in the West-Pacific?
Article Abstract:
The arms race in the Southeast Asian regions continues despite the adverse effects on military spending caused by the region's economic crisis. The two main factors which influence the decision-making process on military doctrine and the reorganization of the armed forces are the minor conflicts, such as border disputes and the major conflicts - the conflicts in the Korean peninsula, the conflict between Taiwan and China and the disputes concerning the Spratley/Paracel Islands. The problems resulting from these disputes has resulted in the revision of the military doctrines among the ASEAN and East Asian nations.

German mine counter-measure vessels out on non-magnetizable steel
Article Abstract:
The German Navy made two critical decisions in the 1970s on the development of its new mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs). The decisions were the MCMV hulls were to be made of non-magnetizable steel and that minesweepers/layers were to share a common platform concept. The decision for the common platform resulted in several advantages in design, training, life cycle costs, logistics and a better cost/benefit ratio. The decision to use non-magnetizable steel was made in the context of the search which navies have made to search for substitute materials for conventional MCMV hull materials.
