ESM supports new roles for submarines

Article Abstract:

A new generation of submarine electronic support measures (ESM) system will allow submarines to project force ashore. In conjunction with a new generation of communications system, new ESM systems will also allow submarines to contribute ESM data to a common operating picture shared with other naval warships. The most important of this new generation of ESM is the Advanced Submarine Tactical ESM Combat System (ASTECS) from Lockheed Martin. ASTECS will be used aboard the US Navy's New Attack Submarine, or Virginia class, which is expected to enter service in Fiscal Year 2004.
