"October Revolution" of European mergers
Article Abstract:
The European aerospace industry witnessed a historic event on Oct 14, 1999, with the official establishment of the European Aeronautics, Defense and Space Co (EADS) through the merger of Aerospatiale Matra and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG. The significance of this historic merger is, in part, political as it marked the re-establishment of what was previously a traditional privileged relationship between France and Germany. From an industrial perspective, EADS is the first truly cross border, fully integrated aerospace and defense firm in Europe.

Does Europe need a common defense?
Article Abstract:
Questions are raised about the necessity to continue with the idea of a common European defense in the situation of no common enemy, no shared defense goals and lack of interoperable weapons among European countries. Operational or procurement-related multilateral projects on a temporary basis would generate the same benefits that a common defense is expected to bring, but with lesser effort, time and money spent.
