Outrider's swansong?
Article Abstract:
Alliant Techsystems' Outrider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program is considered to have failed to meet the expectations that were promised the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. When the aircraft made its initial flight, the two-wing aircraft was not even able to demonstrate its promised intended capabilities. As a result, the Navy and Marine Corps immediately discarded the program, which already cost double its original price. The Army is also said to have contemplated canceling the program. The Navy and Marine Corps are currently considering a UAV that lands and takes off like a helicopter.

Politics of plenty: Will Congress be able to "see" Clinton's $12 billion budget ante and up it?
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton's plan to add $112 bil in the defence budget has gained the support of Republicans and Democrats in Congress. However, fiscal restraints to gain financial surpluses for the government will limit the money for defence expenditures. To offset the limitations imposed by fiscal authorities the legislators will insert additional defence allocations on emergency spending packages. The increase defence spending is expected to help the military cope with budgetary problems.
