Peace in Aceh: Conditions after the tsunami
Article Abstract:
The peace agreement signed by the Indonesian government and Achenese separatists in August 2005 is successful and is moving towards a committed political change. The positive international engagement in Aceh after the tsunami in December 2004 offering multinational aid, and a greater professionalism and effectiveness of the Indonesian military are the main reasons for the weakening in the political motivation of the fight for full independence and the enduring peace in Aceh.

Aceh talks raise hopes for settlement
Article Abstract:
The success of the second round of peace talks between the Indonesian government and separatist GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka) rebels on 24 February 2005 shows that an agreement might be possible in the near future. Some of the hurdles that need to be tackled if the talks have to achieve success are discussed.

Indonesia is attempting to the counter the separatist Free Aceh Movement by issuing, and following through, on the Operation to Restore Security and Public Order in Aceh. The operation is both a military and police action, and it has resulted is the 'liberation' of several areas in Aceh.
