Pokharan blast, Agni tests fail to protect Vajpayee coalition
Article Abstract:
India has tested nuclear weapons at Pokharan and the 2,000-km range Agni II intermediate-range ballistic missile in an attempt to protect the fragile coalition government of Inian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. The initiatives failed as the Indian legislative Lower House refused to endorse a motion of confidence by Vajpayee by a single vote. How the new government will treat his concept of 'minimum and credible nuclear deterrence' has become a subject of speculation.
