RAN plots future submarine course
Article Abstract:
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has created the New Submarine Capability Enhancement Project to plant the future of its submarine force. Identified as Project SEA 1439, the project includes enhancements to the six Collins-class vessels constructed by Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC) and the construction of follow-on submarines. The first stage will allow the Collins class to function with special forces. Changes are anticipated to start in 2000, with a budget of A$65 million, or $40 million, allocated. Stage 2 is a mid-life improvement for the Collins class, with a provisional budget of $300 million.

Surface revolution: DD 21 redefines the destroyer
Article Abstract:
The next-generation DD 21 surface warship program of the US Navy, which is dubbed as the maritime dominance or the land attack destroyer, is expected to bring forth a major departure for the service. The DD 21 is expected to be the initial model of a surface-warship series that is equipped with very stealthy capabilities. The DD 21 program, which will serve as a substitute for Spruance-class DD 963 destroyers, Kidd-class DDG 993 guided missile destroyers and Oliver Hazard Perry-class FFG 7 frigates, is expected to cost the US Navy $25 billion.
