Renewing Adamastor's strenght: The re-equipping of the South African Navy
Article Abstract:
South Africa will revive and re-equip its troubled navy as announced by Deputy Pres Thabo Mbeki on Nov 18, 1998. As of late 1998 the South African Navy's (SAN) operational force had dwindled to a daily average of two surface ships and one submarine. Mbeki announced that bidders had been chosen to provide corvettes, submarines and naval helicopters. SAN chief Vice-Admiral Robert Simpson-Anderson said the new ships and equipment will enable them to fulfill their missions and obligations.

Renewing Adamastor's strength: the re-equipping of the South African Navy
Article Abstract:
South Africa formally launched an equipment modernization program for its 75-year-old Navy in 1998. Budget constraints, however, have reduced the government's original projections regarding the number of corvettes, submarines and naval helicopters to acquire.
