Article Abstract:
The changing nature of warfare has brought into focus the conflicting claims of large mechanized forces and heavy armored vehicles and smaller and lighter manned and unmanned vehicles. However, when at the end of major combat operations in Iraq tanks and other infantry fighting vehicles were withdrawn, and had to be rushed back when insurgency burst upon the scene and this 'uparmoring' has made the Army and Marine Corps heavier than ever before.

Some of the most advanced technologies available to U.S. military forces are with the space systems fielded by the United States. The cumulative effects of combining the capabilities provided by space systems with air and surface weapons have yielded great effects compared to the sum of individual parts, as a result, effect-based operations can be conducted on a much broader scale and with greater efficiency and effectiveness than before.

The potential usefulness of robots in combat, reconnaissance, bomb disposal, communications and other tasks in US military is discussed. Unmanned aerial vehicles have proved their worth but the future robotic combat systems will operate on land and water.
