Sweden is in the process of transforming its military forces from a purely defensive organization into an armed force that is leaner, more versatile and capable of addressing a wider range of regional emergencies. While the country still considers the instability in Russia to be the greatest threat to peace in the European continent, Sweden is expanding its security cooperation initiatives with its Baltic neighbors, NATO and the European Union.

Article Abstract:
The NATO's Defense Capabilities Initiative (DCI) has become the top priority of European NATO member states in their joint and individual defense planning and force structure objectives. Achieving these goals will not necessarily save money in a period of tight defense budgets and cost cutting measures. To succeed, the major European armed forces must take into account the lessons of peacekeeping in the Balkans in pooling their resources.
