Synthetic aperture radar: pictures from radio waves
Article Abstract:
Synthetic aperture radars (SAR) are capable of providing high-resolution images for intelligence, complement or replace infrared or television systems for targeting use and be installed on aircraft as small as drones. Inverse SAR uses Doppler shift and the fact that the shift will be different from one end of the target to another to create a high-resolution image. Interferometric SAR acquires three-dimensional measurements using two antennas or slightly offset passes of an aircraft with a single antenna. Using stored three-dimensional models, articulated or partially hidden targets can be identified by Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition systems. Foliage Penetration SAR is designed to detect targets hidden by foliage and camouflage.
