The Navy goes wireless
Article Abstract:
The battleships Texas, Massachusetts, Indiana and three destroyers along with the North Atlantic Fleet, which included the battleships Kearsarge, Illinois, Alabama and Olympia, were equipped with radios while they sortied to block the maneuver in the summer of 1903. The ways the Navy embraced the revolutionary wireless technology and thus became a leader in its further development are described.

Signal communications advanced during the age of sail
Article Abstract:
Network centric warfare has transformed the US fleet's ability to rapidly react and respond to threats against US and its armed forces by using 'chat' and other high-speed modes of digital communication. Two signal books from the first decade of the 19th century, 'Signals to be used by the Squadron' by Robinson and Little of Brooklyn and 'A Code of Signals'by David Porter are discussed.

Navy Day: a movable celebration?
Article Abstract:
The history of the US Navy League's promotion of public appreciation of American sea power includes Navy Day, first celebrated as a quasi-national holiday on Oct 27, 1922, and now quietly commemorated by the Navy and the League each Oct 15.
