The Philippine Navy - still on course
Article Abstract:
Vice Admiral Eduardo R. Santos, Philippine Navy's (PN) Flag Officer in Command, said that the PN has initiated a modernization program to help it effectively perform its duty of providing naval defense and protecting the country's marine resources. He further stressed that the PN strongly supports cooperative efforts with other naval forces in Southeast Asia to promote peace and security in the region. With regards to materiel issues, Santos said that the quantity and timetable of the naval procurement requirements were changed as a result of the economic crisis in the region.

The UAE Navy on its way to a seagoing fleet

Brigadier General Suhail Shaheen Al Marar, Chief of the UAE Navy, said that the UAE Navy is embarking on a modernization program to cope with country's growing defense requirements. The build-up of the UAE Navy will follow a step by step approach with the goal of attaining a balanced fleet. Aside from the procurement of new ships and naval equipment, the modernization program also includes upgrading of logistics systems, constructing new naval bases and establishing new naval schools.

Swedish anti-ship missile programmes
Article Abstract:
The Royal Swedish Navy (RSN) continues to improve its anti-ship missile program to effectively protect sea-lanes, particularly those that are vital to Sweden's trading activity. The program mainly hinges on SAAB's RBS 15 anti-ship missile system. RSN received the first batch of the RBS 15 MKII in early 1998 and is looking forward to the completion of the MK3 variant, which will have more advanced operational features.
