UCAVs: towards a revolution in air warfare?
Article Abstract:
The idea of using Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs) in actual combat missions is again gaining currency, with the Pentagon recently launching the UCAV Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program. UCAVs as pilot-less fighter aircraft are seen as a possible solution to reducing to near-zero the risk of crews being killed in combat or taken as prisoners. Another appealing side to the idea is the possibity of designing aircraft without the limitations of the human factor. Thus, UCAVs can be designed with maneuver load factors of possibly 20g, which is way beyond the human limit of 8g to 9g.

Super Hornet declared "operationally suitable"
Article Abstract:
The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet from Boeing Co has been declared operationally suitable and effective by the US Navy after the successful completion of the six-month operational evaluation phase. The favorable test result means that the aircraft is ready to enter service, with the first deployment expected in 2002. For Boeing, it means a five-year contract for a first batch of 200 Super Hornets. The US has alloted $3 billion for the procurement of 548 F/A-18E/Fs over the next ten years.
