Undersea warfare: the challenges ahead
Article Abstract:
The development of undersea warfare technology in 1999 has become an exciting activity. A new security environment, the changing nature of roles and missions, emerging technologies, novel operating concepts, forecasted naval requirements and new research ideas have presented the Navy with fresh challenges and opportunities. Littoral operations against sophisticated threats in shallow, noisy waters will be an important R and D area. Network-centric warfare and the concept of controlling the battlespace are emerging as technology drivers. Submarines of the future, therefore, will be network-centric-based and will carry a wide range of weaponry and electronic systems that will expand the battlespace.

Article Abstract:
The nuclear attack submarines (SSN) of the future will be capable of using several undersea warfare technologies which will enhance their role in a littoral battlespace. The SSN will be capable of stealth because of advanced propulsion, coatings and electromagnetic control. Unmanned autonomous undersea vehicles called Mantas will be capable of relaying information on minefields and other submarines through acoustic, optical and electromagnetic systems. The SSN's advanced weaponry would include over-the-horizon ASW missiles which it can launch under the sea.
