Update on U.S. Navy shipbuilding the 'X' factor
Article Abstract:
An update on the status of the new classes of ships which the US Navy is developing is presented. The ships are the LPD-17 class amphibious transport dock, the NSSN attack submarine, the CVX carrier, the ADC (X) logistics ship and the destroyer DD-21. The construction of the new LPD-17 and NSSN programs was authorized several years ago but the keels for their construction have not been laid. The proposed programs which are the CVX, the ADC(X) and DD-21 are still in the planning stage. The Navy should address funding deficiencies which could prevent the completion of these shiphbuilding programs.

The US Navy's budget: good news, but..
Article Abstract:
The Dept of Defense (DoD) budget for Fiscal Year 2001 provided some positive news for the US Navy. Shipbuilding rates have increased to eight warships per year compared to four to five of the last decade. While the Pentagon has achieved its weapons procurement objective of $60 billion per year, there are major shortfalls estimated as high as $100 billion per year. The Navy and Marine Corp's share of the DoD budget for the next fiscal year is $91.7 billion.
