Vital links: The Coast Guard and Navy are cooperating across the board to U.S. awareness of what is happening in the maritime area
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and other agencies are working together to merge their efforts to increase surveillance and security of the nation's coastal approaches, waterways and ports. The services have expanded the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONJ) and the Coast Guard's Intelligence Coordination Center (ICC) and they are trying on the acquisition of new technologies to interdict terrorists threats to the United States.

Article Abstract:
The US Coast Guard is being forced to cede much of its polar icebreaking role to another government agency that hires foreign vessels to do the task, due to budget constraints and dilapidated ships. The nation's icebreaking fleet is becoming obsolete due to overwork, which has caused it to miss its regular maintenance cycles and deteriorate at an accelerated rate.

Article Abstract:
The decreasing willingness of nations to host the US bases has the Pentagon considering sea basing and this scheme is being looked at as a multiservice concept and not one solely restricted to the Navy and Marine Corps. June 2004 saw the development of a joint integrating concept (JIC) for sea basing under the supervision of a JIC Integrated Product Team.
