Article Abstract:
US and Russian defense companies are competing for Asian contracts, particularly that of Thailand which has earmarked $2.14 billion for its defense budget for Fiscal Year 2000. The SA-16 'Igla' air defense system from Russia is being considered by the Thailand government along with US- made Raytheon Stinger missile system. Asian countries will get to know the latest in the defense industry at three upcoming trade shows, Defence Asia '99 in Bangkok, Thailand, Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition, and Asian Aerospace in Singapore.

Article Abstract:
Millennium Bug problems in the Armed Forces of Asian countries are being tackled seriously by some Asian countries including Thailand where 20,000 defence computers are being protected by circuit cards. In Japan 2,000 personnel are working to make the military's high-tech defense computer systems Y2K compliant. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces in China are preparing to combat Y2K problems in their defense systems. However in South Korea, the economic crisis overshadows millennium bug problems in the Armed Forces.

Malaysia is pursuing a defense procurement program that ensures that it will one day emerge as a major weapon supplier to countries in the ASEAN region. The country, which is hosting the Defense Services Asia 2000 exhibition in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia, in Apr 2000, has already entered into a number of memorandums of understanding with foreign arms manufacturers. These include the production of Mig-29 fighters, rocket systems, 155mm howitzers, T-84 tanks and helicopters in Malaysia.
