A child's crusade: more than a million Canadians back a young Quebecer who abhors TV violence

Virginie Lariviere of Quebec and her family obtained 1.2 million signatures on a petition to reduce the amount of violence in television. She met with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to discuss it. The 14-year-old believes that television violence led to the assault and murder of her younger sister even though no one has been charged in the case.

One of the defining moments in the campaign to defeat the referendum on Quebec independence was the massive 'no' rally held in Montreal's Place du Canada on Oct 27, 1995. Thousands of Canadians from all over the country came to the rally to demonstrate their commitment to a united Canada.

One man's crusade: a coroner takes aim at school bus safety

Bouliane advocates many school bus reforms to provide safety for children. He began his crusade in 1986, and has faced continuous opposition from school boards because of the costs of his reforms. The cases he has encountered as a coroner spur his cause.
