The Group of Seven made some progress in furthering international trade by cutting tariffs in areas such as construction equipment, pharmaceuticals and beer. Business leaders say the changes are mostly symbolic, and they believe the Uruguay Round talks may produce more substantial results.

Brewing up a storm

Negotiators from the US and Canada are trying to resolve a trade dispute over tariffs imposed on foreign beer. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade required Canada to lift its trade restrictions on beer. Regional regulations have made it more difficult to negotiate a trade agreement.

Hammered by trade laws: Canadian steel producers face U.S. penalties

The US has imposed trade penalties on steel producers from Canada and 18 other nations. The Canadian steel industry, which exports about 30% of its steel to the US, could be hurt by the US sanctions. The action may drive down the price of steel in Canada.
