The campaign leading up to the Jun 2, 1997, election has been filled with controversy, but few politicians have addressed the major rifts in Canada such as the alienation between the west and the east. Now that the deficit is lessening, the Liberals need to find a new issue to galvanize public support.

Neo-conservatives in Canada have developed a philosophy based on stinginess and inaction to justify their desire to avoid taxes. They even try to portray aid cutbacks to the homeless and refugees as being morally superior to giving aid. They err in measuring everything in terms of costs.
