Brian Tobin resigned from Canadian prime minister Jean Chretien's cabinet on Jan 4, 1996, to run for the premiership of Newfoundland. The popular Liberal is seen as the front-runner in the race to replace Clyde Wells, despite his lack of campaign funds. Tobin's tenure as Fisheries Minister boosted his profile.
