The Golden Slipper is the world's richest race for 2-year-old horses. The winner is immediately worth between $1 mil and $2 mil more as a stud prospect. For some experts the 1999 favorite was Redoute's Choice, but the colt contracted a serious respiratory illness. The winner, Catbird, and Redoute's Choice were sired by the same stud.

Northerly, a workmanlike gelding trained by Fred Kersley, won the Cox Plate race at Moonee Valley, despite protests from two other riders. Kerrin McEvoy, the rider for Viscount, and Greg Childs, the rider for Sunline, had protested the outcome of the race on the grounds of interference.
