AIG Life buys Hartford Life
Article Abstract:
AIG Life Insurance Co of Canada of Toronto, Ontario, has announced a deal to acquire all the outstanding shares of Hartford Life Insurance Co of Canada. Under the deal, minority shareholders will be paid C$42.25 per share or a value of C$31.8 million while majority shareholder Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Co will get a slightly smaller amount. The US- based parent will also retain the Canadian subsidiary's investment products such as segregated funds and guaranteed equity index annuity businesses.

U.S. work force still shrinking
Article Abstract:
A new report from the U.S. Department of Labor reveals that a rise in unemployment occurred in July. The report, which showed a loss of 44,000 jobs for July 2003, also showed that the U.S. economy shed 486,000 workers in 2003.
