AMR deal restrains rival CAI bids
Article Abstract:
AMR Corp's investments in Canadian Airlines International Ltd, made in 1994, can make it difficult for any competing offer for the airline to prosper. AMR, which acquired 827,000 preferred shares in Canadian Airlines for C$246 million in 1994, can opt to convert those stock into common shares and receive up to C$430 million from the carrier in exchange for the shares. That additional cost will make looking for a white knight against a C$1.8-billion hostile bid by Onex Corp difficult.
