AT&T, British Telecom union faces international scrutiny
Article Abstract:
AT&T's international partnership with British Telecommunications (BT) may face regulatory difficulties in many countries because authorities may be eager to defend the interests of national carriers. AT&T CEO C. Michael Armstrong stated that he expects the the partnership to be meticulously examined by authorities although it will eventually be approved because of it promotes competition. Analysts have issued warnings that European regulators may impose considerable concessions on the partnership. The concern came about because BT has secured about 90% of the traffic out of the UK while AT&T controls approximately 50% of the traffic out of the US.

New telecom strike jolts industry
Article Abstract:
Southern New England Telecommunications (SNET) is experiencing a union strike, which is being watched by the industry, as older, unionized phone carriers are being questioned regarding their competitiveness in the industry dominated by players propelled by non-union workers and new Internet-based technologies. The strike by 6,300 workers in Connecticut revolves around opposition to a current two-tier compensation system, which gives differentiated pay and benefits to workers doing the same job. The strike came at a time when the SNET is nearing the completion of its sale to SBC Communications.
