AT&T turns up Internet heat
Article Abstract:
AT&T's intention to buy Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) has heightened competition in the market for Internet access, according to local phone companies. AT&T noted that its acquisition of TCI would raise the speed of deployment of cable modems by a minimum of 20%. Local phone executives, on the other hand, countered they are ready to face the challenge that the combination may present, saying their DSL technology is more advantageous than the cable modems. TCI and other cable TV operators started offering consumers cable modem service more than 18 months ago while local companies only started to compete in the Internet access market in 1998 with the introduction of their high-speed DSL modems.
