Advanced Micro shares fall on news of an unclean chip
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc stock falls $2 to $29 a share in New York Stock Exchange trading Sep 3, 1993, after the company announces that 25 percent of the microcode used in the 'cleanroom' AM486SX microprocessor currently under development is derived from Intel 80386 microcode. Advanced Micro had claimed that its forthcoming Intel 80486 clone would be completely free of Intel code, so that it might be sold regardless of the ultimate outcome of Intel's suit to block the sale of the company's other 386- and 486-equivalent chips, which are entirely based on Intel's code. Advanced Micro now admits that the software engineers working on the cleanroom AM486SX have been exposed to Intel 386 microcode, and that some of it has found its way into the new product. Industry analysts say that the revelation damages Advanced Micro's credibility and wonder whether the company is capable of independently cloning Intel chips.

Analog Devices official is promoted to president
Article Abstract:
Analog Devices Inc promotes Exec VP Jerald G. Fishman to president and chief operating officer. Fishman, 45, replaces Analog Devices' founder, Ray Stata, who will continue as chairman and CEO. Together they will form a new office of the chief executive. Fishman will focus on daily operations while Strata will focus on long-term strategic issues. Analog Devices makes analog-processing microchips that are used in audio, graphics and sensor applications. Although sales have been flat since 1989, Fishman expects a market to open for its new accelerator chip that can be used in automobile air bags to make the triggering mechanism more sensitive and less expensive. Fishman joined Analog in 1972 and rose through marketing, operations and strategic planning positions to become executive vice president in 1988.
