Advanced Micro set to send out new chip
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices announces it will begin shipping its Am386 microprocessor in large volumes. The Am386 is a clone of Intel's 80386 microprocessor, which is currently the microprocessor architecture used in a majority of the world's microcomputers. Intel has long held a monopoly on sales of the chip, but through key legal victories Advanced Micro Devices has won the right to manufacture and sell the chip. Intel continues to fight AMD in court, claiming that AMD has infringed on copyrights for the chip's microcode; AMD is confident it will clear the remaining legal hurdles erected by Intel. Analysts had assumed AMD would compete with Intel by offering a lower priced chip, but instead the company will enter the market with a faster version of the chip that requires less power to operate. AMD is likely to find most of its customers in Asia where supplies of Intel's chip often run short.

Advanced Micro posts record quarter sales
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) reported record quarterly sales that surpassed the estimates of most analysts. The company's clones have won 40 percent of the market for Intel 80386 microprocessor-compatibles. AMD's shares fell $1.25 each to $17.625 on the New York Stock Exchange despite the strong quarterly earnings. Some analysts believe that the company will not sustain the growth because several other clone makers are entering the market and these companies will steal market share away from AMD. Intel Corp is less threatened by the introduction of new clone makers because Intel has long-term contracts with large corporate buyers. AMD earned $82.3 million for its 1st qtr FY 1992, with sales rising 48 percent to $407.4 million from $274.3 million in the 1st qtr of 1991.
