Air France and KLM to Merge, Europe's No. 1 Airline
Article Abstract:
Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have announced they will merge to create the largest airline in Europe. The two will form a holding company to be known as Air France-KLM, but otherwise will be independently managed and will retain their distinct identities, with three core businesses, namely, passengers, freight and aircraft maintenance. The long-term impact may be to make the European airline industry more closely resemble that of the United States, where a smaller number of larger carriers compete on more routes and fares. Some experts predict the deal will cause growth on short flights of the new discount carriers, bringing added pressure to lower Europe's high air fares.
