Air France decided not to modify Concordes
Article Abstract:
Investigators searching for clues on the cause of an Air France Concorde crash outside Paris have discovered pieces of a splash guard or water deflector on the runway. The splash guard, which was designed to prevent water on wet runways from being sucked into the Concorde's engines, was modified by British Airways in 1993 after pieces of the part pierced the fuel tank and poured fuel on the runway. Investigators also said that they believe that the Concorde's tires burst shortly after takeoff, about the same time that the fuel tanks sustained a leak and then burst into flames.
