This article presents the views of Graeme Murphy, artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company, on contemporary dance and its relationship to a modern world in which ugliness and brutality are so inescapable. Relevant points include an account of Murphy's new production, "Air and Other Invisible Forces," a collaborative work featuring Tibetan, Thai, and Japanese influences.
