Alcan profit plunges, but stock gains

Alcan Aluminium Ltd has posted a profit of $38 million in the 1st qtr 1999, down by 67% from $117 million in the 1st qtr 1998. The company said that the profit dropped because of the 18% decline in the average price of aluminum and the weak demand as a result of worldwide economic recession. Alcan Aluminium's revenue also declined during the period to $1.8 billion from $1.9 billion from a year earlier. ;
