Alcatel plans North American blitz
Article Abstract:
Alcatel SA (France) will quickly absorb Newbridge Networks Corp. (Kanata, Ontario) and begin an assault on North American markets following approval of its $7.1-billion (US) all-stock acquisition by shareholders of both firms yesterday. Newbridge develops products that increase the capacity of communications networks. The products include asynchronous transfer mode switches, which route data, and digital subscriber line technology, which boost the speed of copper phone lines. Alcatel wants to use Newbridge as a platform in its bid to become one of the top three players in the data networking industry. Alcatel is looking to Newbridge products and clientele to help it catch up with rival networks giants Nortel Networks Corp., Lucent Technologies Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. Alcatel will launch a new division organized around Newbridge's headquarters in Kanata, at the Supercomm trade show next month in Atlanta. The new division will focus on the booming market for high-speed, or broadband, network gear and concentrate on expansion in the US market. The deal with Alcatel is expected to more than double Newbridge's revenue to $5-billion in the next 18 months.

The deal, which is among the biggest in the telecom equipment-making business, involves Bay Network's good technology and strong clientele despite a weak balance sheet. The acquisition will also make the biggest high-technology firm in Canada a large player in the computer network market with competing US titans such as Cysco Systems Inc.
