Alcatel, France's second-largest company is negotiating the final merger agreement between it and America's Lucent Technologies Inc. Both companies have seen their stock fall as a result of the merger talks. Alcatel CEO Steve Tchuruk plans to build his company into a global telecommunications equipment powerhouse by buying the struggling Lucent for $34 million and turning it around. Investors and analysts both worry that the merger will create another trans-Atlantic company riddled by debt and struggling with French-American cultural conflicts.
