Amateur brain surgery, or, adding to memory
Article Abstract:
Microcomputer users, who may need to upgrade a hard disk or install new equipment, can often perform hardware adjustments at home with few tools. Today's microcomputers are modular, and computer modularity means that users can simply add or replace parts individually. Nonetheless, changes made to one element of a computer can affect other components. A new hard disk, for example, can require a new power supply. Tools necessary in most installation include a flat-head screwdriver, philips screwdriver, documentation and sufficient lighting. Other useful tools include a cotton swab for removing dust, flashlight and tweezers. Memory chips are easy to install but could be ruined if inserted upside down or with pins bent. Hard drives take a line from the power supply, but users need not worry about backward installation.

I.B.M.-Qwest deal on Internet data centers
Article Abstract:
IBM will build 28 Web hosting sites for Qwest Communications International in a $2.5 bil deal. Of this new capacity, IBM will lease back 25% from Qwest. The contract will run for 7 years, and, including fees for the use of Qwest's fiber optic network, cost IBM about $2.5 bil. Currently, IBM gets $1 bil in revenue from Web-related computer services. The deal with Qwest is IBM's first major telecom deal outside of agreements with AT&T. Qwest is hoping to maintain earnings by expanding from low margin fiber optic services into the more lucrative data hosting arena.
